Your 64: Edition XII

Your 64 – a weekly roundup of beer stories and news outside Ontario to inspire you for the 64 hours from Friday at 5pm to Monday at 9am – by Allegra Swanson.

As someone who’s a huge fan of the craft beer industry in Ontario, I have some beer education (shout out to Prud’homme L1!) and two paper certificates crowning me the beer mile champion (2016, 2017, nbd) but lack a role in the industry or how to properly explain the subtle terroir of the hops making up your IPA.

Here’s to the weekend; here’s to YOUR 64.

3 Boozy Beer Adventures in the US

My pick is spending Oktoberfest (topical) in Burgess Falls State Park in Nashville, TN. Having been to Nashville myself many times, I can vouch for how awesome the craft beer scene is in the bustling music town.

Shout out to the Flying Saucer Draught Emporium – an incredible selection with over 200 beers.

Brewed with Renewable Energy – Best Beers for the Green Consumer

Did you know that on average, it takes less than 400 kegs of beer production to account for an entire household’s annual energy use? [Insert embarrassed-faced emoji.]

Click through to see #1 on the list, but I will say that a surprising number of these breweries are owned by Heineken.

Judge Upholds $2.6M Fine Against US Wholesaler

Be warned, all my hustlin’ beer rep friends: paying a slick $2K to bars to ensure a dedicated tap line is a big no-no.

Good luck to the Craft Beer Guild…

Craft Beer’s Newest Hot Job: Bioprospecting

First of all, do you not also picture “ye olde prospector” looking for wild yeast? Excellent.

Secondly, since starting Your 64, this was the best line I’ve ever read in an article: “Microbiologists collect samples [of yeast] from locations like old rooms, nature, and people’s beards.”

The Best Ball Stadiums for Craft Beer

Can you guess which stadium has an 85-foot beer bar with 60 taps? (Hint: it’s not in Toronto.)

What they DON’T tell you, is that each of these beers costs more than the price of the ticket you bought for the ball game itself. Well, close to it anyway.

Molson bullies Edmonton bar owner via the Oilers NHL team

Hi! Since Allegra suffers from chronic beer brain, I’ve selected this in her stead as the most messed up article of the month. Find out why Darren McGeown was commanded to take down all mention of the Edmonton Oilers at his Edmonton bar by Molson Coors. Molson Coors: You are a bunch of dinks.

Look at this: via uncommon goods – never too early to start your holiday shopping.

Make this:  8 Thanksgiving Recipes with Craft Beer

Listen to this: Treat your family to this fabulous playlist courtesy of my pal Jess over at Eastbound Brewing Co.

Cheers to Your 64: I didn’t share an article on pumpkin beer this week! You’re all welcome. Maybe that’s because I’ve finally gotten my fix with my first bottle of my favourite – Great Lakes’ Saison du Pump. All the spice, none of the liquid pumpkin pie. This weekend I’ll be eating full turkey dinners twice, and I’m certainly not mad about it. Enjoy your Thanksgiving weekends and here’s to, once again, Your 64 (or aren’t we lucky, another 88!).
