Your 64: Edition IVTweet
Your 64 – a weekly roundup of beer stories and news outside Ontario to inspire you for the 64 hours from Friday at 5pm to Monday at 9am – curated by Allegra Swanson.
As someone who’s a huge fan of the craft beer industry in Ontario, I have some beer education (shout out to Prud’homme L1!) and two paper certificates crowning me the beer mile champion (2016, 2017, nbd) but lack a role in the industry or how to properly explain the subtle terroir of the hops making up your IPA. Whatever.
Here’s to the weekend; here’s to YOUR 64.
Who’s keen on a last minute trip? As if any of you lushes needed a reason to drink beer on the Friday of a long weekend… it’s International Beer Day on August 4! When first researching an article to commemorate this holiday, I found an article suggesting you take the Budweiser Brewery Experience. Promise I won’t be sending you there.
If badges on Untappd weren’t enough… now there’s a bottle opener that will announce to your thirsty friends stuck in the office on a Friday at 2pm that you’re already living your best life and enjoying a cold one. Best beer merch I’ve seen all summer.
While that article heading sounds like click bait, it’s true! Janelle Shane has created a neutral network (computer program) to randomly generate beer names after learning to imitate datasets by looking at examples. Some favourites: Heart Compost (IPA), Helusto’s Humpin’ Red (Amber), and Pimperdiginistic The Blacksmith W/ Cherry Stout. (Seriously laughed out loud on that last one.)
How much do you really know about biermischgetränke? I see you all nodding wisely and saying you’ve had it straight from the source. Well… “beer mixed drinks” don’t get the same eye roll in Germany as they often do in Canada and the same goes for radlers. Consider Radler Fest back in 2014 when you could try a Gratzer Grape Radler (85 percent New Belgium/3 Floyds Gratzer and 15 percent grape soda). I say, it’s summer! Get over yourselves. Enjoy a radler.
Breaking news yesterday from Japan. My only burning question is, “when am I going to get Anchor Steam in a Sapporo-sized can?”
I bet you have guesses. I bet you know it’s not France. But: did you know that in this country, the average person drinks 300 “large” beers a year? Bravo, I say.
Venturing into areas other than beer here (which all sound divine) but heck, I would head to the famed beer spot mentioned here if it meant I could get a peanut butter Porter… yum.
Look at this: courtesy of @hasley_india (real important for you to know that India’s biggest beer pong festival is happening this weekend.)
Make this: Peach – Cherry Lambic Charlotte (guys – peaches are officially here)
Listen to this: Everything Now – Arcade Fire
Cheers to Your 64: This weekend I’m hitting the road and driving out to the east coast. First stop, Edmunston, where I just happen to be a 5 minute walk away from Les Brasseurs du Petit-Sault, followed by PEI and a favourite of mine, the PEI Brewing Company. Highly recommend the Island Red.
